What do you have to consider when buying a used turbocharger?
Customers who intend to buy a used or a short-lived turbocharger should keep in mind the following facts, even some dealers give a warranty for these turbochargers:
- In case of a warranty claim, an existing defect in a used turbocharger is difficult to be proven before its installation. Often the defects are not recognized even by the suppliers of the used turbochargers and they can basically be dismissed as assembly errors, since their condition before installation is not clearly evident.
- You will not notice the thermal effects on the rotor shaft (mechanical stress induced by the thermal effect)
- You cannot see oil coked bearings from the outside.
- You cannot see a bearing damage from outside (You cannot check the bearings by bearing clearance only).
- You cannot detect any defects of the vane geometry.
- Dirt and dust getting into the bearing housing during disassembly or storage also cannot be seen – resulting damage, lingering enter the bearings or the shaft, can also occur gradually.
- Most of the manufactories avoid installing used or short-running turbochargers (warranty conflict due to their working performance).
- For all damage claims, the customer must provide evidence of professional installation (signature of the installator on the warranty card). But how should this be possible with used turbochargers case if their technical condition is unknown before installation? The installing workshop can dismiss the assembly defect as a technical defect of the used spare part.
- Your warranty right for used spare parts is impending at the event of the damage!
What do "cheap" turbochargers have in common?
There are countless providers of refurbished turbochargers on the web. All of them guarantee to deliver the best quality. The majority of the suppliers do not manufacture the turbochargers themselves, but have repairs carried out in other countries with lower wage level.
Many of the actual clients are often unable to gain a deeper insight into the repair process. As retailers they are offering replacement parts at low cost without realizing what are actually selling. The outer part looks ,,finished’’, clean and shining, like a brand new product. But what do inner facts say?
A turbocharger does not function according to its external appearance. And so we often receive turbochargers for analysis which a customer has bought somewhere cheaply and which do not work, make noise and are already defective or fail again after a short running time.
After an inspection and disassembly into all individual parts, serious quality defects are very often found which are not visible from the outside.
Some,,specialist companies’’ offer open sales of VNT catridges, even with a method of adjustment by line marking. If, in addition the small print excludes warranty for the VNT mechanics or adjustment (mechanical or electronic), this is more than dubious! Calibrate a VNT mechanism using a line marking is a lottery game. This can only be strictly advised against!
How does the return of used parts work?
In the event of an obligation to return a used part, a deposit is charged.
The old part must be returned to us within 6 weeks of purchasing the new part, stating your bank details and invoice number.
The old part deposit will then be refunded to your account immediately.
Old parts that have been dismantled or only partially dismantled or have broken housings are excluded from the full old part refund. In this case, please contact us beforehand.
How do you have to replace a turbocharger correctly?
The most common cause of failure of new units is their incorrect or careless assembly!
The changes of the turbocharger, its improper use or increased performance can cause damage. For this reason, please observe the manufacturer’s repair instructions of the engine and the following general installation information:
- Before installing a new turbocharger, be sure to determine the cause of the failure to prevent a damage of the new unit.
- Check the engine’s air and filter system before installation, replace the oil and the filter.
- Check or clean the engine exhaust manifold and the intake pipe. Foreign bodies in the pipelines cause damage during commissioning.
- Check the air intake between the turbocharger and the engine – especially the intercooler – for oil residues and remove them, otherwise there is a risk of engine damage due to uncontrolled overturning of the engine because oil residues are sucked in as “fuel”. If the charge air cooler contains large amounts of oil, it is better to replace the charge air cooler!
- Fill the oil inlet bore of the turbocharger to the brim with clean engine oil, turning the turbocharger shaft a few times on one of the shaft wheels so that proper lubrication is ensured during commissioning!
- The oil-in pipe should be changed! A renewed failure due to foreign bodies in the oil-in pipe or a lack of oil (causing oil coal, deformed line) is highly likely. Check the oil return line, clean if necessary. If in doubt, this must also be replaced.
- Work cleanly so that no foreign objects get into the lines during installation! Remove the existing protective caps from the openings immediately before installing the respective connection (exhaust manifold, air intake, boost pressure hose)!
- Install the turbocharger using new seals! In particular, the seals of the oil-in and oil-out pipes can hardly be changed in many vehicles when the turbo is in the assembled state, for reasons of space. Use only seals with a suitable specification! Never use liquid sealants when connecting the oil lines!
- After an oil change, it usually takes a little longer for the oil pressure to build up. If possible, only let the engine turn with the starter for a few seconds without the engine starting (diesel: disconnect the diesel pump; petrol engine: remove fuse of fuel pump, etc.) so that the oil pressure can be built up.
- Start the engine and let it run for 3-4 minutes at idle before accelerating!
- After commissioning, check all – air, gas and oil pipes for leaks and leakproofness.
Some vehicle manufacturers have additional maintenance and installation instructions when installing a turbocharger. These must be observed in addition to the usual installation instructions!
Attention!
Failure to follow the installation instructions or improper installation will void your warranty and warranty rights!
What happens in the event of a warranty claim?
We grant a 24-months warranty for purchased new products.
If you purchase a product from us whose manufacturer offers an additional warranty, we will process your warranty claim directly to the manufacturer as part of the manufacturer’s warranty. This means that your warranty claim will be directed to the manufacturer and will be verified and evaluated by them.
We grant a 6-12 month warranty for regenerated parts!
If defects in our products are suspected to occur during the warranty period, you should rule out possible and other related sources of error before the warranty claim is made.
This could eliminate unnecessary assembly costs.
Send the requested products for inspection to us. Goods sent freight collect will not be accepted by us!
If a complaint is unfounded, the examined component will be returned disassembled. In this case, reassembly is subject to a charge.
