A regenerated turbocharger is in no way inferior to a new one!
The difference is the quality of the repair.
Generally, the housings of the turbochargers are being reused.
While the repair of turbochargers may be of the same design principle, VNT/VTG turbochargers deserve special attention. It is known that many original manufacturers do not supply spare parts for VNT/VTG types.
An oil-bearing turbocharger is dynamically sealed with piston rings. As long as there is a balanced pressure in and around the turbocharger, a turbo charger is not,,leaky’’, since the oil pressure only acts directly in the bearing. There is no oil pressure on the piston rings anymore. If the pressure balance, consisting of intake pressure, boost pressure, exhaust gas pressure and oil pressure, is disturbed, this leads to oil loss on the turbine or compressor side.
An oil-bearing turbocharger is almost wear-free. Many of the malfunctions or deficiencies in the ATL (turbochargers) suggest the housing of the turbocharger not the turbocharger itself.
Therefore, the construction of the turbocharger should be checked in details before the ATL is going to be replaced.
